El fet d’anar digitalitzant cintes de casset i de bobina oberta per engreixar l’Arxiu Sonor de la Ràdio a Catalunya em permet que moltes persones i institucions es posin en contacte amb mi. Una d’elles ha estat la Fundació Tom Sharpe a través de la seva marmessora, la neuròloga Montserrat Verdaguer.

L’escriptor i fotògraf Tom Sharpe va tenir la sensibilitat de guardar les entrevistes radiofòniques que li feien en casset. També enregistrava, de la mateixa manera que ho feia el/la periodista, la conversa que concedia fora dels estudis de ràdio o televisió. Això sumat a les converses que feia amb amics o sol i que també gravava en casset.

Quan vaig parlar amb la Montserrat per telèfon vaig estar molt agraït que comptessin amb mi. Em va sorprendre molt quan em va dir que n’eren més de 650. Això eren moltíssimes hores de feina! Al meu ritme, potser seran un parell o tres d’anys, però vaig acceptar encantat el repte.

Vaig quedar amb la Montserrat i em va donar una maleta amb les primeres 34 cintes de casset que ella mateixa havia elegit. Es nota que porta el control perfecte de cadascuna, ja que està anotat en un full a part el contingut. En aquesta primera entrega hi ha un munt d’entrevistes de la BBC i d’altres ràdios del Regne Unit. A banda que m’ho estic passant molt bé escoltant-les, m’adono del nivell de la ràdio d’aquell país i de l’ambient divertit i reflexiu que aconseguia Tom Sharpe en totes les converses.

Tota aquesta digitalització anirà directe a la Fundació Tom Sharpe, però m’he permès una petita mostra del material que estic escoltant cada cap de setmana. Tom Sharpe ja forma part una mica de la meva vida.

Digitizing Tom Sharpe’s Sound Legacy

The fact of digitizing cassette and open reel tapes to increase the Sound Archive of the Radio in Catalonia has allowed me to get in touch with many people and institutions. One of them has been the Tom Sharpe Foundation through his executor, the neurologist Montserrat Verdaguer.
The writer and photographer Tom Sharpe had the sensitivity to save the radio interviews he was given on cassette. He also recorded, in the same way as a journalist, the conversations he gave outside the radio or television studios. This added to the conversations he had with friends or alone and which he also recorded on cassette.

When I spoke to Montserrat on the phone, I was very grateful that they counted on me. I was very surprised when she told me that there were more than 650 of them. That was a lot of work! At my pace, it might take a couple or three years, but I happily accepted the challenge.

I met with Montserrat, and she gave me a suitcase with the first 34 cassette tapes that she had chosen herself. You can tell that she has perfect control over each one, since the content is noted on a separate sheet. In this first installment, there are a lot of interviews from the BBC and other radio stations in the United Kingdom. Apart from the fact that I am having a great time listening to them, I realize the level of radio in that country and the fun and reflective atmosphere that Tom Sharpe achieved in all the conversations.

All this digitization will go directly to the Tom Sharpe Foundation, but I have allowed myself a small sample of the material that I am listening to every weekend. Tom Sharpe is already a part of my life.
